This article is right on the mark. I was a first-generation college student myself. I had the distinct advantage of being able to attend a two-year Penn State campus--the Shenango Campus--in my home community. When I transferred to University Park, I already had friends who transferred from the same campus. Even then, the transition was not easy, until I found a job--and a cadre of professional colleagues within the university that gave me a sense of community.
